Building An AI Policy For Your Business

It’s time for me to create an AI policy. And I would argue….

  • If you’re in an industry massively disrupted by AI already, the time is now for you too.
  • If you’re in an industry mildly disrupted by AI, you might want to consider for the near future.
  • If you’re in an industry not touched by AI quite yet, you might want to bookmark and come back to a year or two from now.

It’s going to be needed for all of us, the only difference is timing.

How To Think About Your Stance On AI

Let’s identify three levels of creation…

AI Free – This means you created the content (written, audio, video, photographs, design) without the help of AI. The idea and the execution were all done by human brain and hands.

AI Assisted – This means you created the content (written, audio, video, photographs, design) using AI in the process. Maybe for ideas, maybe for outlines, help with writing, editing, etc. Most content right now is AI assisted if you really drill down and think about it. Advanced editing tools, auto-finishing sentences, etc. You’ll realize the majority is currently AI assisted.

Important question — Do you want to measure how much AI assistance, or not?

AI Generated – This means the entire work was largely done by AI. This could mean the idea, the outline, the writing, the imagery, the design, style, etc. This is the type of content we’re seeing an explosion of because the tools are getting better and better at generating human-like writing and videos.

As a business owner, I think that most of us would probably default to the AI Assisted category. And maybe it’s important for us to let our audience know what our “default” is. That way, when we deviate from the default, we can label it as such.

Default AI Involvement Based On Medium

You might realize that your default for the various mediums is different. For example, for me….

  • Writing – I am AI Free, AI Assisted, and AI Generated – all three. AI assisted is most common right now although, in emails — I am largely AI Free. I would probably choose AI Assisted as my default.
  • Design – AI Free
  • Video – AI Free
  • Audio – AI Assisted (on the editing, show notes, etc.)
  • Photos – AI Free (outside of editing that happens with filters and whatnot)
  • Software – AI Assisted, AI Generated

Removing the MORALIZATION of AI From The Discussion

People are getting on their high horse about AI. Some are judging those who use it. Others are fully embracing it. AI is a tool that is already disrupting our civilization and will continue to. There’s no reason to throw judgment and criticism here. Transparency is key.

Part of the issue is trust. No one knows what’s real and what’s fake. And by having a stance on AI, you eliminate the question behind whether or not what you’re putting out is really you or not. If you are struggling to be truthful, it’s probably because you’re having an internal struggle yourself. Take care of that and own your stance.

AI Policy for Julie Chenell and Pipe & Lime Media LLC

I’m thrilled to embrace cutting-edge tools like Artificial Intelligence to help me craft content that’s fresh, thought-provoking, and (most importantly) useful for you.

This policy outlines my use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating and distributing content. The goal is to be fully transparent about when, how, and why AI is used, so you know exactly what to expect.

Whenever I deviate from the default I’ve set below, I will label as such so that you are aware.

Default AI Involvement Across the Julie Chenell Brand:

By default, I use AI tools in the following ways:

  • Written Content: Typically AI Assisted for research, ideation, editing, and polishing. (All personal emails and posts will remain AI Free unless otherwise noted.)
  • Design & Imagery: Primarily AI Free, except for minor touch-ups or AI-based photo editing tools.
  • Audio & Video:
    • Audio is often AI Assisted (e.g., automatic transcripts, editing software). Voice is AI Free.
    • Video remains AI Free unless specifically stated otherwise.
  • Coaching: AI assisted (to help with curating advice, making lists & tools, distilling down complex topics, sharpening my advice)
  • Course Creation: AI assisted for course outlines and content (all videos, screenshares, and teaching videos with Julie Chenell teaching are AI free outside of some light editing and transcription)

How I define these labels:

AI Free – This was fully Julie Chenell, from idea to execution.

AI Assisted – AI tools & LLM models were used to help organize, edit, and curate the content you see. There was at least 50% involvement or more from Julie Chenell or another human.

AI Generated – The majority of this work was done with the help of AI. This may include the idea, the organization, the content, and the execution. More than 50% of the work was handled by AI, including the idea itself.

Some people judge anyone using AI, while others fully embrace it. AI is a tool—one that’s transforming how we work and create. My stance is simple: transparency over moralization. People just want to know what’s real and what’s not.

Transparency & Trust

AI is a powerful tool that’s rapidly changing how we work. I recognize that trust hinges on honesty, so I remain open about my AI usage. If you ever have questions about which parts of the process involve AI, just ask!


Like I said, feel free to use this and change or adapt as you need. I would love a shout out or hat tip if you decide to share it, but I really want as many people as possible to adopt this idea so that we can stop judging and fearing AI, and get to integrating it in a way that works for us.
